Good morning, San Diego.
Housing is a big topic in San Diego today.
I know, I know. It’s been a big topic every day, as long as I’ve been alive. I remember when I moved out of San Diego for a while and unintentionally revealed to everybody how brainwashed I had become when I described a home that was under a million dollars as “a bargain.”
Two stories we’re looking at today examine this reality from different angles. First, our Jennifer Vigil takes a hard look at homes used exclusively for vacation rentals and City Council member Sean Elo-Rivera’s attempt to tax them.
A committee will decide Wednesday whether to move the revamped proposal on for review by the full city council.
But before that, another vote is taking place elsewhere in the city. As our Drew Sitton explains, the San Diego Unified School District will be taking up the topic of workforce housing today, with the largest education housing project in California’s history on the table.
The district hopes the project will ease educators’ housing burden, help revive SDUSD’s flagging enrollment and provide a new revenue stream.
