Hello, Uptown!
The thing about San Diego’s — and any densely populated area’s — issues are that there’s never an easy answer.
Our housing is too expensive, so we build more. But, then a high rise ends up next to a nightclub and it changes the area’s atmosphere.
So, we don’t build more housing — or don’t build affordable housing — and people get priced out of their neighborhoods and that corner store with the clerk you can count on turns into a Sweetgreen.
Development with an entire community in mind takes a certain amount of care, consideration and nuance of thought that is not always convenient, especially when cities feel like they’re at a crossroads.
San Diego is at a crossroads of that sort. Local politicos are assessing the historical designation process in part to prevent barriers to new housing. Reporter Drew Sitton takes a look at this issue from both angles in this week’s featured story.
