Good morning, San Diego.

San Diego County is growing again — thanks primarily to the city of San Diego.
After 170 years of relentless growth, San Diego (and California) declined in population for the first time during the pandemic.
As longtime California planning expert Bill Fulton broke down for us based on new state data, San Diego added 43,000 residents over the last three years, about 12% of all growth in the state.
Even more surprising: nearly three fourths of the county’s population growth occurred in the city of San Diego.
Fulton, the co-director of UC San Diego’s Center for Housing Policy and Design, broke down how the region’s evolving housing policies brought us here.
While the city’s full-speed-ahead approach to addressing the housing crisis has paid off in the short term, the data doesn’t show how residents feel about it. From Hillcrest to College Area, all the way over to Pacific Beach, these changes are not always welcome with open arms. But that doesn’t mean the changes are going to slow down, and we’ll be here to keep you updated on what they are.
