Helping you understand your neighborhood, one number at a time

You may have noticed a new story we’re offering you in this newsletter. Each week, in addition to sharing breaking news and neighborhood developments, we take a deep dive into city data about a topic that might have an impact on your life.

This week, in light of reports of yet another shooting homicide downtown, we’re looking at homicide rates. We’ve taken other looks at your safety, including examining auto thefts, car crashes and assault rates.  

But we also know what’s useful to you is often the simple-but-practical things that affect your quality of life: Reports of trash dumping, graffiti or which streets had the most potholes.

The work starts via numbers from the city of San Diego and the analysts at Crosstown, a California-based journalism service that helps people understand their neighborhoods through data. We examine this data for stories here at Times of San Diego’s data desk. Then we try to bring them to life so the image on your screen or your phone can tell you a story about your neighborhood.
