Intense heat wave coincides with Climate Week. Advocates call the timing evidence of ‘what we are honestly facing.’

There is no need to inform you that it is hot outside. We’re all feeling it.

On top of being hotter than Dubai on Saturday, San Diego this weekend earned a place in the historical record. Since 1847 there have been three recorded instances of back-to-back days of triple digit temperatures. Saturday and Sunday earned that accolade.

Luckily, we didn’t make it to three days in a row, which has only happened once on record, in 1936.

It’s a grim coincidence that the oppressively hot week arrived alongside San Diego Climate Week. Several events have already been cancelled as a result of the heat. For the activists who are part of the event, it’s a stark reminder of the inescapable reality that the week of policy-focused discussions is meant to tackle.

But, there’s still an array of programming this week. There are over 200 events from community partners and volunteers that span from donating clothes to exploring how to turn your waste into compost, as our Drew Sitton covers in a new story.

Speaking of waste… Dorian Hargrove dug into the data around the city’s trash fee error, here’s the breakdown:

According to County data, 15 homes were overcharged by more than $2,000 on their property taxes. Another 1,026 were overcharged by more than $1,000 in trash fees — which differs figure from the 640 customers identified on the city’s website.

District 9 had the highest share of customers who were overcharged, with 62.9% of customers in the area receiving bills above the amount they should have paid. You can find the breakdown of each district here.
