Gratitude and gluttony

We’re in the home stretch toward Thanksgiving, and more importantly toward the main event: When Santa comes to town.

While we’re on the topic of Thanksgiving — a holiday that I personally have mixed feelings about — it’s a good time to let you know I’ll be taking next week off from this newsletter for the sake of the holiday.

I have many contradicting thoughts about Thanksgiving. First of all, it is a necessary evil to guide us toward winter and a holiday feel. I say evil because I usually end up getting sick from the amount of pecan pie I consume. Gratitude is a necessary practice to get through life, so I think it is nice to have a day to highlight it. However, the gratitude turns to gluttony and, like I said, my pants will no longer fit well.

The one thing I think my Thanksgiving gatherings have done better than any Christmas event are the savory foods. I will take something slightly overpowered by garlic over a sugary taste any day. And, when savory meets sweet it’s a beautifully irresistible combination.  We’ve got a couple recipes for you that marry those flavors.
