Good morning, San Diego.
So, Gov. Newsom is dispatching the California Highway Patrol to help local agencies, like the San Diego Police Department and San Diego County County Sheriff’s Office, fight crime.
Sorta like sending in the cavalry? But crime rates have been falling – in San Diego, in fact, for the third straight year.
Read between the lines and one gets the impression that Mayor Todd Gloria and Sheriff’s officials, though respectful, felt a bit slighted.
The Sheriff’s office, for instance, said that CHP teams “will augment what we are already doing to keep our communities safe.” Gloria noted the “hard work and appropriate resourcing of our local law enforcement.”
Meanwhile, the Council on Criminal Justice, in a report last month, found that rates of both violent crimes and property offenses are down year-over-year in 30 U.S. cities. But remember, Newsom is a man eyeing a run for president, so burnishing his tough-on-crime bonafides may be worth ruffling a few local feathers.
Turning to another aspect of law enforcement and safety – on a holiday weekend, there’s a higher potential for DUIs and wrecks with so many revelers on the roads. Be careful out there! There’s a million fun things to do – our Weekend Guide offers up a few – and we want you to get to them safely. Oh, and a warning from, ahem, the CHP – patrols will be on “maximum enforcement” through Monday night.

Opinion: Gov. Newsom playing for a tie in national redistricting battle
Even if voters approve Prop. 50 and it generates five more Democratic members of Congress, it would merely offset the five-seat gain in Texas.
