The fate of concerts at Gallagher Square nears trial in case brought by residents fed up with the noise
If you’ve gone to a concert at Gallagher Square, there might be one element you weren’t really thinking about through all of that noise: the neighbors.
Residents above the concert venue are asking a judge to force the Padres to reduce the noise that comes from shows there. Their next day in court is in October, and if they succeed it will end a three-year court battle.
Those with noise complaints are making a distinction between concerts held at Petco Park and those in Gallagher Square. The field is a closed area and the square is not. Sound travels differently from each.
Residents are arguing that the city does not apply the same 95-decibel cap put on Petco to Gallagher Square. They say the concert noise creeps into their homes on a weekly basis.
While the residents are asking for a judge to force the city to comply with its noise ordinance, the city council has recently made some adjustments to those requirements. Back in June, the ordinance was amended to temporarily allow permitted concert venues to go above typical noise limits citywide.
