Good morning, San Diego.
Sometimes you want to be the center of attention. Other times not so much.
For instance, this week we had one local official who thinks San Diego County is more than ready for its closeup. On the other hand, another group seemingly didn’t want anyone to take note of their response to the death of Charlie Kirk. But, whoops, social media.
And there’s one man who seemed to simply want to keep his head down and earn his place in America. But after his arrest in June, that appeared unlikely. Let’s take a scan:
• Mayor John McCann this week took time out of a Chula Vista council meeting to offer his condolences on Kirk’s shooting. Three councilmembers walked out. Then the video hit social media. Though the mayor issued a statement calling for unity, the group collectively seems to be saying “nothing to see here.” The one councilmember who would talk pretty much said just that.“It wasn’t a big moment,” he told reporter Drew Sitton.
• Like to play “spot San Diego” at the movies? Head to One Battle After Another, which opened Friday. A county economic development official wants more film shoots to head here by building “word of mouth” among the right people – and not just for the exposure or to see stars like Leonardo DiCaprio.
•An asylum seeker who assisted U.S. service members by interpreting for them in Afghanistan must be released from immigration custody after a judge’s order. The government, he ruled, stripped the interpreter of humanitarian parole “without notifying him, providing him reasoning for the revocation or giving him an opportunity to be heard.” An advocate celebrated the order, calling it “such good news.”
That’s a wrap on a busy Friday. One more bit of business: No one came up with the correct year for the release of Apocalypse Now, my question from Friday’s newsletter. The Francis Ford Coppola classic hit theaters in 1979.
