Hello, Downtown!
After an overextended closure, the food hall in Little Italy is back open and serving. It’s answering the bell for business in time for the fourth annual outdoor charity boxing match held there on Date Street in the Piazza della Famiglia.
The Food. The new, 4,700-square-foot Global Fork Food Hall is operated by Tiger Hospitality. It’s now indoor-outdoor with the main bar moved from the middle of the space to the piazza side.
The dining lineup includes six concepts. Four are owned by Tiger Hospitality – Cosmos Burger, Lobster Lab, Prik Ki Nu Thai and La Vida (offering light lunchings such as salads and smoothies).
Indie food operators in the food hall are Moto Pizza and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream.
The Fights. Right outside the food hall, outdoor tables will be cleared away to make room for Punches in the Piazza. The first of nine amateur fights begins at 6 p.m. on Sept. 11. The date is fitting since some event proceeds go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (for those affected by the terrorist attacks back in 2001). Other revenue will go to Little Italy’s Washington Elementary Foundation.
Punches in the Piazza was founded in honor of influential local boxing promoter Bobby DePhilippis, a longtime owner of Fillipi’s Italian Restaurants. He promoted more than 60 fights at a former convention center near the El Cortez back in the day.
Organizers are aiming to raise $50,000 throughout the evening. General admission tickets are $50; VIP seats go for $200. For more information go to: Punches in the Piazza.
