Good morning, San Diego.

Local officials are distributing air purifiers to some of the residents most affected by the Tijuana River sewage crisis.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the county did the same thing last year — but that first batch wasn’t equipped to effectively filter toxic gasses, as I lay out in a new story.

The new effort, from the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, not only includes air filters that work, it also includes far more of them and is awarding them based on need, not through a lottery.

It’s the latest instance — I hope — of some tangible progress building up in response to the long-running, intractable environmental justice crisis at the Tijuana River Valley.

Bonus: I’m a bit of an air filter nerd (pretty cool, right?) So check out my how-to-guide at the bottom of my story for instructions on building a DIY air filter.
