Hello, Downtown!
Downtown San Diego no longer has chain movie theaters, but the city is still home to at least half a dozen niche film festivals. The festival menu includes Italian, Asian and Latino and more.
The Italian Film Festival is going on now through Oct. 11. Movies are being shown at the (recently merged) Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art (Balboa Park) and the Digital Gym Cinema at UC San Diego Park & Market in East Village.
In La Jolla, the San Diego International Film Festival runs from Oct. 15-19. Mark Hamill will receive the Gregory Peck Award.
Lights, camera and action take place twice in November. The Coronado Island Film Festival gets its closeup Nov. 5-9. Look for the CIFF’s tasty Culinary Cinema Series, held in conjunction with downtown’s nationally acclaimed San Diego Food + Wine Festival.
Our local Asian Film Festival (Nov. 6-15) will screen 150 movies in a variety of theaters across San Diego County.
In 2026, the reels start over with the Latino Film Festival (March 18-22). Home base is the downtown Digital Gym Cinema, with some films showing at AMC Mission Valley.
Hold on to your popcorn tub: A few months later, the GI Film Festival San Diego (May 6-8) kicks off in Balboa Park at the Museum of Photographic Arts.
