Rolando’s Casa de Mosaic: Helping adults with autism – and the community too

Diana Figueroa, a social worker and mediator, was at a loss when she tried to find a place for her adult son to stay when he became too old for high school. The places weren’t very stimulating. “He would be indoors and just kind of watched for the day, and that wasn’t acceptable to me,” she said. “So, I decided to make my own program.”

Three years later, that decision has worked out not only for her son, but for the other families at Casa de Mosaic, not to mention the schools and businesses where her clients help out by watering plants and restocking shelves. “And I think we bring so much to the community between all the cleanups that we do and the partnerships that we have,” Figueroa said.

Contributor Calista Stocker has more on how Figueroa, by filling a personal need, also forged community connections.
