Good morning, San Diego.

Let’s spend some time at the courthouse today.

How’s this for a yarn? “It started with a fight at the Cow Shed Bar & Grill in San Marcos. It ended up creating precedent-setting law for California.” The story involves a bar fight, a lawsuit, a cyber scam to snag the six-figure settlement and then more legal wrangling. We’ll let JW August lay it all out for you.

In a federal courtroom this week, a judge finalized his preliminary ruling that the government violated the terms of a settlement in a family separation case that dates back to the first Trump administration. The judge was clear about his stance on the government’s claims of meeting the terms of the agreement. “None of these efforts … actually delivers the services set out in (the settlement provision),” he wrote.

Meanwhile, a Union-Tribune deputy editor who was laid off shared her frustration over an editorial she claims was killed – on ICE, the Los Angeles protests and the National Guard – and San Diego International Airport took another step toward completing years of construction on Terminal 1.
