Good morning, San Diego.

“Aloha, Mission Church,” the senior pastor says in greeting each Sunday.

That’s one of Gordon Wong’s ways of welcoming his extended family – ohana is the word for that – and keeping a tie to his native Hawaii, Oahu to be exact.

Mission Church also hosts “Ohana Sunday” an annual event that brings Hawaii to a pocket just off Interstate 8, not far from San Diego State.

Our contributor Sydney Brammer shares Wong’s travels – he bounced from Hawaii to San Diego to Kansas and back to Hawaii before landing locally again – and how he ended up at Point Loma Nazarene University and then at Mission Church. He’s one of about 4,000 Hawaiians who live in San Diego, she reports, and he’s pleased he’s able to share a little slice of his original home in the church – whether it’s for others like him or those who just want to feel like ohana.

Hey, soccer fans, SDFC is 3-0, a good start by any measure. The other piece of the local fútbol puzzle falls into place Saturday when San Diego Wave FC hosts its season opener at Snapdragon Stadium. It’s a new-look Wave, led by Ludmila and a host of fresh faces. Contributor Mark Nero has more.

Political junkies! The June primary, now less than three months away, is the first step in replacing Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is termed out. The list of hopefuls has been finalized, and we have Dan Walters, a long-time Sacramento columnist, to sort out what it all means.

Opinion: Here’s what’s next in California’s unusually crowded governor’s race

The lack of a clear frontrunner at this stage of the campaign is not only an unusual phenomenon, but it creates a raft of potential scenarios.
