Hello, La Mesa!

Last week I got an inside look at how changes on the federal level are having an impact in our very own East County.

The La Mesa Collaborative discussed how assistance agencies can support people being kicked off CalFresh, also known as food stamps. The changes are part of Trump’s federal cuts to domestic programs passed last summer in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

With so much going on nationally and internationally, and with limited ability to make change, I’ve found the remedy for nihilism is often right at home. I can’t ensure my brother, an Air Force pilot, is safe, but I better be sure my neighbor has dinner.

So thank you, La Mesa Collaborative, for making sure our neighbors are fed.

Another Trump administration change hitting home: La Mesa-Spring Valley School District will no longer be held to a Title IX deal with the Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights. But Superintendent David Feliciano says the reversal doesn’t matter too much for the district because the changes have already been instituted. It does, however, have bigger legal implications.

In other other news, I teased a story two weeks ago about trans people dealing with the dearth of public bathrooms in the region. That article is now up. I’m really in awe of the people who so vulnerably shared their stories.
