Aloha, La Jolla!
A childhood friend’s favorite expression never fails to make me smile: “If it’s free, I’ll take three!”
In the spirit of celebrating all things complimentary, I’ve compiled a collection of free autumn-centric community events that channel the color and spirit of the season.
Pumpkin Carving Party: If carving a Halloween pumpkin is your craving, make a beeline to the Flower Pot Café and Bakery the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 24, between 3 and 6 p.m. This family- and pet-friendly party conjures up a delightful brew of creativity and fun! Kid-safe carving tools are provided. Bring Your Own Pumpkin (BYOP).
Blessing of the Animals: Celebrate the enduring bond between pets and their human companions at The Congregational Church of La Jolla’s Blessing of the Animals. Pastor Tim Seery will conduct the ceremony as part of his congregation’s traditional Sunday worship service. Decker’s Dog & Cat will offer dog and cat treats to pets in attendance. The celebration unfolds on the church’s courtyard patio Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Trunk or Treat Festival: Cars and candy collide at the annual La Jolla Trunk or Treat Fall Festival. Step out in your favorite costume and join hundreds of neighbors as they stroll along a row of decorated cars with open trunks brimming with Halloween treats. Arrive hungry – complimentary chili, apple cider and pie-in-a-cup will be served – and be sure to stop by one of several pumpkin carving stations to bring your creative vision of a jolly Jack-o-Lantern to life. Hosted by La Jolla Presbyterian Church, this delightful tradition transforms Draper Avenue, between Kline and Prospect Streets, into an autumn wonderland Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Mariachi Honor Band Concert: Mariachi music is autumn’s quintessential soundtrack: passionate and exuberant, it conveys the colorful prism of the human experience. The community is invited to celebrate the next generation of mariachi at a free, one-night-only performance featuring San Diego’s finest high school and university mariachi students. Presented by the La Jolla Music Society, this inaugural musical showcase takes centerstage at The Baker-Baum Concert Hall (The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, 7600 Fay Ave) Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m.
How do you fall into Fall? Share your stories with me at: Molly@windanseacommunications.com. I’d love to feature your voices and photos in next week’s column.
