Good morning, San Diego.

Add a tax, subtract another. Today we’re talking about two different  measures that will and might end up on your ballot.

On Monday former Mayor of San Diego Kevin Faulconer alongside the Lincoln Club announced they will be moving forward with a ballot initiative to suspend the City’s new trash tax for two years. But, nothing is certain yet. In order to get this initiative on the November ballot, they’ll need to gather around 21,000 signatures.

On the adding a tax front, yesterday the city council moved forward a ballot initiative to tax vacant second homes. When Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera first introduced this tax it was a package deal with a short-term vacation rental tax. That measure didn’t make it past the rules committee.

So, this time around Elo-Rivera kept the empty second home tax on its own. It passed 8-1 and will appear on San Diegan’s June ballot.

Councilmember Raul Campillo was the lone holdout, mainly over his concerns that the city might not be prepared to defend the measure in court. His statements caused a bit of a tension with Council President Joe LaCava. Read about it in our featured story.
