Happy Thursday, Beach & Bay!

This might be the warmest summer we’ve had in years. Southern California is in the middle of an El Niño year, causing warmer coastal waters and a shift in atmospheric patterns. The heat wave we felt this week could just be the start.

Parts of the county are under extreme heat warnings, while those of us near the coast are dealing with King Tides, muggy air and unrelenting high temperatures. According to a report published by Times of San Diego, NOAA is warning that we could be headed for a “super” El Niño that massively disrupts global weather.

So what does that mean for the rest of our summer? We’re at higher risk for more persistent heat waves. Here are some tips to stay cool:

  • Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows during the hottest part of the day.
  • Open windows at night and in the early morning to pull in cooler air and give your AC a break.
  • Avoid turning on the oven and cooking over the stove whenever possible.
  • Stay hydrated all day. A glass of water with a squeeze of lemon or lime and a pinch of salt makes a great natural electrolyte drink!
  • Use cold, wet towels or ice packs on your neck wrists and ankles to help cool down.
  • Take care of your pets by making sure they have constant access to fresh water, adjusting walk times and avoiding hot pavement.

There is a silver lining: warmer coastal waters are making beach swims even more inviting. The hot weather gives us a chance to slow down and focus on spending time outside in our beautiful neighborhood. Enjoy it while you can – but remember to hydrate, take breaks from the sun and reapply your sunscreen!
