A labor-backed group is trying to stop a North Park redevelopment on environmental grounds

Only days after the San Diego Planning Commission approved a proposed redevelopment to the historic Newman Building, just steps from the North Park sign, an appeal was filed with the city.

The group. known as the Supporters Alliance for Environmental Responsibility, SAFER for short, cited — as you could probably guess by the name — environmental concerns with the project.

Some don’t see SAFER’s motivations as entirely out of concern for a development’s potential impacts on traffic or air quality.

SAFER, through its CEO, has faced accusations of repeatedly challenging projects and instigating CEQA lawsuits in an effort to pressure developers into signing labor agreements. The CEO also serves as the business manager for the Southern California District Council of Laborers union.

Next Tuesday the city council will either require the developer to return to the planning commission and address any environmental concerns, or deny the appeal and let the project continue.
