Good morning, San Diego.

When I think of Downtown San Diego, “artful” is not a word that comes to mind.
But if you’re familiar with the mural at the Civic Center concourse area, you might know what I mean. Even without the random graffiti scribbles on it, I’m not sure I would be particularly moved by the piece. I think it might be the trolley cars with wings that feel, well, odd.
As you can probably tell, I tend to be skeptical of the artistic taste of the folks appointed by City Hall. But so far, the Prebys Foundation hasn’t given me a reason to be a hater, so our top story today isn’t entirely off-putting — as long as they can pull it off.
A team is being assembled to unveil a new plan this spring for an arts district. The details haven’t fully materialized, but the idea is to enhance public art and create a space for artists in the city. There’s a lot they’ll have to cover in this plan. I’m skeptical that they’ll be able to make downtown a place that burgeoning artists can actually afford, but our reporter, Drew Sitton, reminds us that there was a time when the arts dominated downtown.
