Good morning, San Diego.

Brooke Binkowski
Brooke Binkowski, Morning Update Editor

If you’ve been looking for something to do around town but you haven’t seen much going on, hold on tight — because this is your weekend!

First off, I’m spotlighting a lovely story by our Elizabeth Ireland about the Mission Fed ArtWalk in Little Italy this weekend, an annual tradition that brings together hundreds of artists from all over the country to showcase the best of their work. There’s also going to be food and live music, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say there might be dancing, too.

National Library Week is winding down, but our reading-related festivals are just beginning. It’s one of the best times of year for book lovers. Mireya Miner has a great piece on the San Diego Book Crawl, the “Super Bowl of books” coming up this weekend if that’s your thing, and Alejandro Maciel also has a fantastic piece on the Latino Book Festival in Oceanside, also this weekend.

Don’t feel like reading? That’s fine! The Chicano Park Day festival is this Saturday. The Barrio Logan event is always an excellent time, featuring incredible art and artists, live music, incredible food, and of course lowriders. But wait, there’s more! Adams Avenue is having one of its own festivals, Adams Avenue Unplugged. There will be live acoustic music as the name implies, along with booths, food trucks, and the usual array of attendees ripe for people-watching.

And then there’s the Fern Street Circus— actually, there’s so much more going on that I’ll just have to direct you to our Arturo Garcia’s guide to the vast number of events going on this weekend, marking the beginning of the spring festival season.

Have fun and maybe I’ll see you out there! But first, I have to pick which event…

Opinion: Study of in-custody deaths at central jail confirms systematic failures

The data confirms what has been said repeatedly: these deaths are not isolated events, and are not beyond the control of the sheriff’s office.
