Hello, Downtown!

Downtown San Diego’s outdoor movie theater has been honoring late actress/singer/national treasure Dolly Parton with special screenings this month, including a nod to her film “9 to 5.” That groundbreaking 1980 film will hit the screen at Rooftop Cinema Club atop the Porto Vista Hotel in Little Italy on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.

Parton’s hit film “Steel Magnolias” was the featured screening at RCC on Sept. 3. Tickets sold out in days. Seats for “9 to 5” are selling quickly. Nothing on the books at the moment, but keep an eye out for future al fresco films starring Parton.

For tickets and information go to: Rooftop Cinema Club.

Parton passed away on Aug. 25 at the age of 80. The 11-time Grammy winner released 49 studio albums, while writing 3,000 songs.

“9 to 5” was her first film. Parton wrote the award-winning soundtrack for the movie, which starred Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dabney Coleman. It’s considered a cultural turning point for helping  push feminist workplace frustrations out into the mainstream.

RCC says 95% of proceeds from its Dolly showings go to The Dollywood Foundation in support of the Imagination Library, her creation that put more than 300 million books into the hands of kids around the world.

After her death, Imagination Library announced a partnership with San Diego’s Dr. Seuss Foundation. A new program will deliver free monthly books to children up to the age of 5 in San Diego County.

It’s a purpose-driven memorialization of the women who once said, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”
