La Mesa Courier weekly update

Today’s newsletter is presented by Best of La Mesa.

Hello, La Mesa!

Drew Sitton, La Mesa Courier newsletter host

The nonprofit that supports La Mesa’s newly minted Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating 25 years next week.

Up until a couple weeks ago, the department in charge of La Mesa’s parks, facilities and a range of recreational programs was known as Community Services.

“While the name is new, the department’s commitment to serving the community remains the same,” Mayor Mark Arapostathis said when the change was announced in August.

Now, the nonprofit La Mesa Parks & Recreation Foundation is turning 25 with an anniversary disco party Saturday, Sept. 27, from 6 to10 p.m. at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive. Tickets raise money for an inclusive playground and shade (yay!) at Aztec Park.

On the topic of parks, I have new roommates with a toddler in my apartment. They are outdoor people but unfamiliar with the area. As I was suggesting some things to do, I realized I evaluate parks based around shade to read a book and walking trails — not great criteria for toddlers. Do any of you have park and playground recommendations? Send them to drew@sdnews.com, and I will pass it on.

Speaking of recommendations, be sure to vote for and nominate your favorite businesses in the Best of La Mesa contest!

Lastly, I am so proud to be a journalist providing access to free coverage of local news. Please support our work by helping us reach our $14,000 fall fundraising goal.
