Digging up some dance history

I don’t think we dance enough.

If you have a pre-teen son at home who plays Fortnite, you might have read that statement and scoffed. But, consider the act of dancing outside of viral dances that flood the internet.

When is the last time you felt music, organically and among other people, without a second thought as to what they might think?

Our featured story this week is about Danny L. Scarborough, a San Diego State professor, and his legacy as a pioneer in the world of dance. In this piece, Editor Brooke Binkowski embedded a mini-documentary that I decided to delve into after reading the piece.

In the documentary Scarborough says, “You do not have to be somebody’s concept of what a dancer is all about. If you can breathe, I’m willing to work with you.”

So maybe, Scarborough and I would have disagreed on the effect TikTok has had on the world of dance, maybe he would think the more the merrier. There’s a chance we would agree that the internet has demanded a formula and ego from dance that has made the art form exclusive. But, I have a good feeling we’d agree that there should be more of it.
