What have you been reading lately? As the pace of the world around us never seems to slow down, reading is one of my preferred ways to rest and recuperate. With the rain we’ve been getting lately, there’s nothing like curling up with a cozy blanket and a good book to pass the time.

I currently have two books checked out from the Pacific Beach Library: “When the Body Says No” by Gabor Maté and “The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden. I’ve yet to start the latter, but I plan on finishing it before the movie comes out in December!

Heading into the colder months ahead of us, it could be a good idea to stock up on some winter reads. You may have heard that the public library system suffered from budget cuts recently, but it’s still a wonderful resource for books, movies, TV shows, audiobooks and more. Plus, the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library is a polling place for California’s November special election. You can drop off your ballots at any time, even outside of library hours. Look for the big red and steel box outside the library, facing Cass Street.

If you’re more the type to highlight and leave notes in the margins, Pennywise Books on Garnet Avenue could quickly become your new favorite weekend shopping spot. They have a wide selection of used books in all different genres, with the option to buy, sell or trade your old books! I love this shop for unique gifts and unexpected reads, or a leisurely way to pass the time on Saturday afternoons.

What have you been reading lately? If you’d like to share your recs, send me an email at beachandbayhost@gmail.com

P.S. There are still last-minute tickets available for Mission Bayfest at Mariner’s Point Park this weekend, with headliners Slightly Stoopid, Sublime and Rebelution. Get your tickets here before they sell out!

Wishing you a fun and safe weekend!

‘Bubble Queen of Mission Bay’ Reggie Dyer Veit reigns with joy

By Elizabeth Ireland • Times of San Diego

About half an hour before sunset, something extraordinary happens at Mission Bay Park. Giant, iridescent bubbles float through the air, some stretching 8 to 12 feet, occasionally drifting over Interstate 5 and past apartment windows, leaving wonder in their wake.
