Happy Thursday, Beach and Bay!

A long awaited project in Pacific Beach is finally nearing completion. Compass Commons, a community shelter project for working unhoused neighbors, debuted at the end of June. This project takes a unique and holistic approach to homelessness, and sets Pacific Beach apart as the first neighborhood in San Diego to put community support at the center of the solution.

In the parking lot of Christ Lutheran Church on Cass Street and Chalcedony, six temporary housing cabins offer private, dignified shelter to the Community Care Crew – a group of 6 unhoused individuals employed at local businesses, working toward a fresh start and permanent housing stability.

Compass Commons is a first-of-its-kind project from Shoreline Community Services, built in collaboration with local churches, businesses and neighboring town councils to support people experiencing homelessness. But the path here wasn’t easy, as City of San Diego regulations delayed the project for years. My latest article for Times of San Diego covers those challenges, and the optimism this project brings to homelessness solutions across the county.

Shoreline Community Services’ work is remarkable. I hope this story makes you as proud as it makes me to be part of this community.
