Good morning, San Diego.

We learned more Friday about conditions faced by the pilot on a doomed Cessna 550 before it crashed in a Murphy Canyon military neighborhood. As he said in a recorded exchange with air traffic controllers, “doesn’t sound great.”

Why? Catch up on the latest on the crash that killed the pilot and five passengers in our “What We Know” roundup. Or take a deeper dive in a story that offers a glimpse into some of the factors federal investigators are exploring in the crash – including weather, visibility and faulty systems at the airport where the plane was headed.

Still, it will take more than a year before the typically painstaking National Transportation Safety Board completes its work. Their lead investigator said his team will remain in the community up to three more days to gather the evidence they need.

It was an unusually busy Friday before a holiday weekend, as San Diego Rep. Scott Peters introduced a bill to place limits on a president in the most serious of cases – launching a nuclear strike. And an East County mayor expressed his displeasure with the latest homeless count, which showed a jump in his city. His words for it: “inflated” and “inaccurate.”
