Good morning, San Diego.

It’s not an easy time to own a local business. If you read this newsletter yesterday, you might be thinking this is some sort of Groundhog Day thing going on— spoiler, it’s not.
While yesterday we had a story about one place that decided to quit fighting the tides of economic uncertainty, there are others who chose to weather the storm.
Right now a group of Hillcrest business owners are waiting out narrow margins in hopes that the near-year of construction obstructing foot and vehicle traffic to their storefronts will eventually bring in more customers than before.
The construction of Pride Plaza and the Normal Street Promenade — an endeavor to bring the first bonafide park to Hillcrest — broke ground last April and aims for completion before this summer’s Pride event.
Not every business on the block reports a notable decline in sales, but the ones who do carry an optimism for the health of their businesses once construction is finished. Although, that doesn’t make them any less eager to see the area rid of excavators.

The money is there. What’s missing is the willingness to pay the frontline workers — who keep the campuses running — what they’re owed.
