Aloha, La Jolla!

It takes a community to brighten a life.

Ask John Slavin.

The professional photographer, known for his captivating images of surfers jousting with Mother Ocean’s waves, is the grateful recipient of a reliable, used van, made possible by the Windansea community’s can-do Aloha spirit.

Last month, a grassroots fundraising campaign — anchored by a GoFundMe page and a benefit concert headlined by surfadelic jam band Seapoodle — raised $4,600 for John’s new mobile studio.

A live auction — featuring two custom art prints, created by surfboard shaper and artist Tim Bessell and his wife, Robin — crescendoed on the winning bid for Melinda Merryweather’s from-the-heart donation of a keepsake Hawaiian shirt from surf legend, Mike Hynson’s, storied collection.
