San Diego County’s iconic coastal locations face triple threat from ‘Super El Niño’
We know El Niño is on the horizon. From the statewide emergencies to the local alarms that have been raised. How detrimental it might be is something we’ll have to wait and see.
But what might happen to our coastal landmarks?
That’s what our contributor Thomas Murphy decided to dive into. From Torrey Pines State Beach to Crystal Pier, these places we hold dear could see significant impacts from the impending weather.
Many of these landmarks haven’t obtained reinforcements to handle significant erosion or flooding. Considering the coastal regions, scientists told Murphy, “I am sure that some people are not taking this as seriously as they should.”
The sandstone cliffs that line our coast are especially vulnerable to what’s coming, And while the city has projects in the works like Sunset Cliffs’ resilience project, but we will likely see damage this year, before we have been able to reinforce these zones.
