Today’s newsletter is presented by Cox.
Good morning, San Diego.

Yesterday I talked about one San Diego gathering that was told to hold off until the organizer could get permits from the city.
Today I have a story for you about one event that has tried to get permits and was denied them.
If you spent your 2023 Fourth of July in Ocean Beach, you might recall a drone show instead of fireworks. Well, hold onto those memories because it’s looking like you won’t be able to remake those any time soon.
Organizers of the event tried to secure permits for the event last year and for this upcoming Fourth. They’ve been met with rejection from the city.
A city spokesperson says it’s because of the lack of availability from SDPD to enact a road closure, and that the 2023 had drones that operated outside of approved boundaries.
The chair of the committee who put on the show disagrees with what the city has to say. “But where SeaWorld has a path forward, Ocean Beach hit a wall,” he said.
One more for the peninsula: The D2 council race is still quite a crowded council race, and constituents got to hear for the many candidates Monday night. I sat in, and our intern Mireya Miner, joined me to talk to some voters.
Head’s up: Change is a comin’
We’ve been re-working this newsletter behind the scenes, and tomorrow we plan on unveiling it. You’ll still be getting a daily digest of the news you need to know from Times of San Diego, but it’ll look a bit different. For one, we plan on bringing you a more curated list of our best articles of the day, and keeping you up-to-date on San Diego’s current events by pulling together news from across the city.
It’s not everyday that you get to relaunch a newsletter, so we want to do this with your help. When you take a look at tomorrow’s newsletter, let us know what you think

Opinion: San Diegans deserve better than a trash tax bait and switch
The effort to repeal the trash tax is about restoring that balance. It is about telling city leaders that San Diegans are paying attention.
