Happy Thursday, Beach and Bay!

School’s out, tourists are arriving and the marine layer is finally burning off. Over the weekend, I organized a beach trip with friends to celebrate this unofficial start of summer.

One friend mentioned she wanted to check the water quality before committing. It hadn’t even occurred to me to look. I know you’re not supposed to go in the ocean after it rains, but we hadn’t had any rain. That got me thinking about the Tijuana River crisis, and I realized checking water quality before you swim is a good habit.

Looking at our picturesque coastal city, it is hard to fathom that many of our beaches aren’t always clean. While the ongoing sewage crisis in the South Bay is at the forefront of most everyone’s mind, it’s important to remember that ocean water in parts of Pacific Beach and Mission Bay tests in the yellow range. This means bacteria levels exceed health standards and swimmers are advised to stay out. In fact, yellow advisories dot San Diego’s coastline, according to theย County of San Diego Beach Water Qualityย site. Tourmaline Beach is among the affected spots, according toย San Diego Coastkeeper.

While solutions to the Tijuana sewage crisisย keep falling short, the best thing we can do is stay informed. Check water quality before you swim and stay out if the water’s flagged. The beach is still a great place to lay out and soak up the sun, and honestly, the water’s still pretty cold anyway.

Until next week!ย
