Good morning, San Diego.

El Mencho, notorious leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed by Mexican forces on Sunday, kicking off civil unrest and violence in multiple areas in the country.

U.S. tourists have been forced to shelter in place amid the civil unrest. Flights into some of Mexico’s more popular destinations are being canceled, particularly into Jalisco state.

There are also reports of unrest in the border regions; cars and convenience stores were set on fire in Tijuana on Sunday, leading to all of them being temporarily shuttered, and at least one food truck was firebombed in Mexicali.

Classes have also apparently been canceled for Monday over fears of violence. We’ll have more this week as the situation develops.

Our other featured story today is about how big music festivals are drying up — in San Diego, and around the country.

But while San Diego can’t seem to get a multi-day, multi-genre festival to stick around, the region’s niche, single-genre festivals are doing better than ever.

Our Ron Donoho looked into how the region’s festival scene is playing out.
