A new report explores impact of Topgolf, part of the port’s East Harbor Island redevelopment, on the waterfront
A recent CEQA review says the Port’s plans to house a Topgolf on East Harbor Island could have impacts on local bird populations and the waters of the harbor.
If you’ve ever seen or been to one of these Topgolf spots, their big thing is being big. As far as I’ve seen, these facilities typically cover multiple stories, allowing more folks to step up to a tee at the same time.
A part of what makes these facilities work is a giant net at the end of the driving range The released environmental contends that the 170-foot net on the development could alter local bird populations. Bright lights at the top of the net could attract birds and leave them entangled.
Topgolf offered a solution of constructing a one-story facility instead of three. The environmental review says this change would reduce the potential impacts.
The vice president of planning and development at the Port of San Diego believes it will be a “huge amenity to the community.”
And the community has a say on the matter. Comments can be submitted to the port before 5 p.m. on Aug. 24.
