Good morning, San Diego.

Californians are getting more concerned about our mental health, and who can blame us? It’s a stressful time.

Just yesterday I was wondering why I felt so unusually exhausted, mentally more than physically. Was I coming down with something? Was it the weather? (It’s so often the weather.)

But no; this time, it’s the anxiety. I’m coping in my usual ways: diving into books and picking up bizarre interests and hobbies. I highly recommend getting as weird as possible in the face of stressful situations over which you have no control, a trick I learned during 2020. Do you have a strange interest that you have never explored? Have you always wanted to learn how to do the Thriller dance, for example, or pick up woodworking?

But some things can’t be ignored by picking up new and unusual hobbies. Getting really into begonias is no substitute for being able to actually afford to live, or having access to reliable, professional mental health care.

A full 72% of Californians surveyed in our top story said they were worried they wouldn’t be able to afford to live in California long term. It is an issue that will need to be addressed, and soon.

We’ve also got some updates about Kamala Harris, La Jolla’s years-long push to secede from the City of San Diego, a spotlight on rock stars who are aging to perfection, and much more.

But now I have to get back to my kombucha brewing. Happy Sunday, everyone. Hope it’s a good one.

Opinion: Prop. 50 is California’s shield against other states’ power grabs

Proposition 50 is a shield, not a weapon. It says California will meet fire with fire, just long enough to preserve the balance of power in Washington.
