Hello, Uptown!
Recently, Balboa Park has been a central topic of conversation among San Diego residents for the paid parking fiasco, which museums say caused a decrease in attendance, and how the community came together to push back against it.
As a result of the backlash and the public’s involvement, Balboa Park now offers free parking for San Diego city residents. Visitors are able to reserve a spot for their vehicle via online registration for no additional charge, which many consider to be a step in the right direction.
On March 28, the San Diego Community Coalition organized a public meeting in the Mission Valley Library to discuss the future of the historical site’s management. Attendees found the most pressing issue to be Balboa Park’s administrative needs, and advocated for reform of the park’s governance.
We as Uptown residents have the privilege of having Balboa Park’s art venues, museums, gardens and sites of historical significance as part of our backyard. Whether it is attending town halls or reaching out to city officials, there is a way to stay involved in our community.
If the case of Balboa Park has taught us anything, it is that we do have a voice in the city’s policy making and legislation, and it will be heard.
