Hello, Navajo and College Area!

Tessa Balc, here, subbing-in for Dorian while he’s on island time.

If I mention Pablo Picasso, what comes to mind? The word “art,” or the fact that he is a painter? Maybe nothing at all because that’s not your thing. But, it may surprise some folks to hear he was also a potter.

Well, you have the chance to do as Picasso did, with lesser odds of creating a less-than functional piece. And, I’m sorry to say, it’s likely your piece won’t have quite an impact on the art world like his work did. But, it very well might have an impact on the local College Area business community.

This is a long-winded way of saying there’s a new business opening its doors in the College Area/ Rolando zone. You have the opportunity to welcome them to the neighborhood tonight.

More about the business: The Hangout Pottery Lounge is one of those spots where you can pick an unglazed, completely blank ceramic piece and make it your own. Half the battle has already been won — all you need to do is let your creative juices flow.

And who doesn’t love adding a new mug to the collection? Whether your style is “World’s Best Middle Child” emblazoned on a white background or a duo-tone timeless piece, it’s completely up to you what it will look like.

It’s a family-friendly business, but there are some 21+ pieces you can pick from to paint. Like a cocktail glass or even a certain cannabis-smoking apparatus. I was honestly somewhat shocked to find out that is an option.

You can get started on your masterpiece tonight at their Grand Opening Celebration. Or you can stop by to say hello, and get a free balloon animal. Snacks and drinks from neighboring businesses will be there too.

The event is taking place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. but the studio will stay open until 10 p.m. tonight. You know, late night creativity and all. And maybe I was out of line, a protégé of Picasso could very well be a part of this newsletter list.
