Good morning, San Diego.

Tessa Balc, Audience Engagement Producer

One thing is glaringly obvious about San Diego’s financial situation : The City is broke.

If you recall, last year’s proposed budget included a plethora of cuts to services like parks and libraries. Most of those were reigned in, with the help of a bunch of new fees.

Well, the time has come for Mayor Todd Gloria to reveal this year’s proposed budget. This time we’ve got clues about what’s on the chopping block.

On his Instagram, the mayor teased his cuts to middle management roles at City Hall. He said his upcoming budget eliminates 48 of these positions.

More of what we know: Despite a $120 million deficit, Gloria said there won’t be across the board cuts by department. The Union-Tribune reports funding for fire and police will increase, though both departments could see some services eliminated.

That push-and-pull — increased funding in some areas, cuts in others — most likely won’t be isolated to public safety. The U-T also reports a somewhat similar situation for the Transportation Department, but with a little more give than take as city residents gave highest priority to this department in the mayor’s recent budget survey.

Visit our site this afternoon, after the budget is unveiled, to see how San Diego might be spending your money this next year.
