Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
By the time Independence Day rolls by, it feels like summer is in full swing. During July in Ocean Beach, the foggy marine layer dissipates and the sun fully comes out to play. But, that begs the question, what else does summer have to offer after the Fourth of July?
Well, in Ocean Beach there’s a lot in store. First off, the Point Loma summer concert series kicks off tomorrow, July 10. The concerts will take place at 5:30 p.m. every Friday at Point Loma Park off of Catalina Boulevard through Aug. 7. This week’s headliner is The Long Run, an Eagles tribute band. In my opinion, the Eagles tunes are a perfect ode to summer with tracks including “Take it Easy” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”
If you’re looking to get behind the mic, Winston’s also hosts karaoke on Fridays at 9:30 p.m. and Sundays at 8 p.m. Trivia is every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Speaking of karaoke, frontman of the local live karaoke band, Death Cab For Karaoke, Jay Nightride is launching a new pop-punk themed bar/restaurant/coffee shop opening at the end of Newport Avenue soon.
Drink-182 is an homage to San Diego’s pop-punk founders, Blink-182, and the genre as a whole. The restaurant will serve James Coffee in the mornings and New England beach pizza — a unique style of pizza with thin crust, square slices, provolone cheese and sweet sauce — throughout the day. On top of the pizza and coffee, Drink-182 will be a functional late-night hangout zone, closing at 2 a.m. on weekends and Wednesdays.
To stay on theme, the place will be decked out in pop-punk memorabilia from artists who supported the project and (I’m not done yet) arcade games. I’m out of breath just naming all the things this place is supposed to offer. Hope to see you there when it opens!
