Aloha, La Jolla!
Surfing is approached with humility. Mother Ocean is unpredictable: One moment, you’re carving the glassy face of the perfect wave. Next, you’re gasping for air under its weight, hoping your last breath will sustain your journey to the ocean’s surface.
An alchemy of spiritual humility and aloha gratitude inspires the Congregational Church of La Jolla’s inaugural Blessing of the Surfboards.
The come-as-you-are celebration will unfold the morning of Sunday, June 28. Surfers of all faiths, ages and abilities are invited to gather at 9 a.m. among the whimsical Monterey Cypress trees nestled in La Jolla’s Kellogg Park. After a warm welcome and meditation from Reverend Tim Seery, the church choir will sing an ocean-themed anthem, accompanied by Music Director Nina Gilbert on a rain stick.
From there, Reverend Seery will invite surfers to grab their boards and walk with him to the soft, silty sand of La Jolla Shores beach. One by one, the surfers will step forward and offer their surfboards for a blessing of sea water and a prayer.
The service will close on a joyful note: A group paddle out to an “expression session,” giving surfers the opportunity to dance with the waves, in their signature flow, without the pressures of competition.
“Surfing is a spiritual and holy act that forms community, transforms lives and punctuates our existence, “ Reverend Seery explained.
“We know the power of the ocean,” he continued. “Understanding that risk, surfers rely on their hard-earned wave wisdom to light their way. The Blessing of the Surfboards is our congregation’s way of reminding surfers that they are loved, protected, and seen.”
