Good morning, San Diego.

It’s not a surprise that Qualcomm Founder Irwin Jacobs last week dropped $500,000 into a campaign committee supporting Ammar Campa-Najjar’s bid for the 48th Congressional District. Campa-Najjar is, after all, dating Rep. Sara Jacobs, Irwin Jacobs’ granddaughter.

But the other big donation that landed in Serving CA, the committee created this year specifically to support Campa-Najjar, did catch our attention.

The $250,000 donation came from the Servant-Leader Fund — a group that in turn received 95% of its funding from two iterations of the With Honor Fund.

So where did the With Honor Fund’s money come from? Our Tessa Balc followed the serpentine path through campaign finance documents to find the source, and it turns out most of that group’s money came from the Bezos family. That includes $10 million from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos himself.

Balc’s story unveils not only the major donors who are jumping into one of the most consequential congressional races in the country — including the Democratic Majority for Israel PAC that is supporting Councilwoman Marni von Wilpert’s bid — but also how each of them are dealing with requirements that independent groups not coordinate with the candidates themselves.

In other news, SDSU cornerback Chris Johnson was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the first round of this weekend’s NFL Draft — and our Noah Perkins got a chance to talk to him about becoming the first Aztec defensive player to go in the first round since 1972.
