Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
This week has been an eventful one for Ocean Beach. The 2026 California primary election took place on Tuesday June 2. As we voted to narrow the field for a new governor, the people of Ocean Beach and Point Loma also got to vote for someone to fill a city council seat in District 2.
As the results came in late Tuesday it has come down to former Coronado mayor Richard Bailey and deputy city attorney Nicole Crosby as to who will face off for the seat. So as we begin to make our way toward November, it’s a good opportunity to brush up on the two candidates.
Richard Bailey was the mayor of Coronado from 2016-2024. He recently moved to Point Loma. Formerly a Republican, Bailey dropped the party affiliation in February to run as an independent. Throughout his campaign he’s been very critical of city hall and its current leadership. He’s running on various policies, like cuts to city spending, fixing ailing infrastructure and repealing various fees and taxes. Bailey has been criticized by Crosby about his proposed cuts to the budget that could threaten parks, libraries and homeless shelters. He was also issued a warning by state election regulators in April for not properly disclosing his personal investments.
Nicole Crosby is a deputy city attorney endorsed by the San Diego County Democratic Party. While also being an attorney she has been a longtime community leader in Clairemont. She is running on policies like making San Diego more affordable, fixing the city’s infrastructure and prioritizing public safety. Crosby has been critical of Bailey recent move to Point Loma, noting that she is the candidate with a local track record in the district. His criticisms of her stem from her association with the city, especially with those critical of the current Democratic leadership, like its handling of the city’s spending and increase in fees. But Crosby has distanced herself from this notion, citing the lack of an endorsement from Mayor Todd Gloria, and the fact that she doesn’t work at city hall.
With many issues on the minds of Point Lomans and OBceans — like Midway Rising and the pier renovation — this election is an important one. So I would encourage you to do more research before November and find the candidate that best suits your concerns.
