Good morning, San Diego.

Two long-simmering cases with San Diego ties have attracted international attention – and not the best kind. Both are heavy reading for the weekend, but worth a deep dive.

The government has agreed to end the wrongful death case brought by the family of Ashli Babbitt, the San Diegan who was shot and killed in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Though no details have been disclosed, a settlement could be read as another gesture from the Trump administration in favor of those who stormed the Capitol in 2021.

Then there is the case of Anastasio Hernández Rojas, a long-time San Diego resident who was undocumented and died in Border Patrol custody. A human rights commission is calling for a new criminal investigation of his death following injuries he suffered at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in 2010. This is a hot potato – three U.S. agencies dodged questions regarding this week’s ruling.
