Aloha, La Jolla!

Autumn sunsets are out of this world: an artist’s canvas of slate-gray clouds brushed with swirls of pink-apricot light.

Judging from a recent surge in stunning sunset photos posted on Nextdoor, many of my La Jolla neighbors agree.

But why, I wondered, are autumn sunsets so breathtakingly beautiful?

Lucky me, I didn’t need to search far and wide for an answer. My husband, CBS 8 Meteorologist Shawn Styles, was happy to oblige. He shared his weather wisdom with me, over dinner, in a broad-strokes presentation, punctuated by sweeping hand gestures and occasional sips of wine.

“After summer transitions into autumn, the sun sits lower in the evening sky, and its light moves through more of the earth’s atmosphere. Traveling that extra distance scatters blue light – which has a short wavelength – and allows longer wavelengths of reds, oranges and pinks to color the sky. Finally, fall air is cooler and drier, with less humidity and haze to block or dull sunlight, which adds richness and depth to the color of autumn sunsets.”

I discovered La Jolla Colony resident Chris Schlichtholz’s enchanting photos of La Jolla sunsets on Nextdoor. He graciously agreed to share some of his favorites with us. Enjoy!

UC San Diego sent hundreds of dead bodies to the military — Families say they never knew.

By Thomas Murphy • Times of San Diego and Sasha Ryu – Special for Times of San Diego

Over half of all bodies UCSD loaned between April 2024 and December 2025 went to the military, according to records obtained by Times of San Diego. Despite being the Department of Defense’s highest-paid cadaver supplier, the university’s body donation forms do not disclose military use to donors or their families.
