‘We are on the front lines’: Asm. Ward and veteran groups spotlight bill protecting trans troops

President Trump issued his executive order on transgender service members within days of his return to the White House.

Honestly, it’s full of ugly language. “The Armed Forces have been afflicted with radical gender ideology,” the order argues. Its title, “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness” leads one to assume that transgender service members can be neither excellent nor ready.

Assemblymember Chris Ward hosted a rally Friday in which several troops targeted by the president appeared. Ward gathered them together to call attention to his bill, AB 1775, which would make state resources available to ease the way of California-based service members in their forced return to civilian life.

Ward defended their tenures in the military, saying “they have served honorably across every branch of the armed forces.” A woman forced out after nearly two decades of service called Trump’s order not just “an attack” on Americans, but Californians too.

The rally, incidentally, came just days after a federal appeals court said Trump’s order “appears to be driven by the bare desire to harm a politically unpopular group.” Our Arturo Garcia has more on the bill and the next legal steps.
