California has thousands of abandoned oil wells. The health risks remain unclear and it will cost billions to clean them up
If you told me there’s an oil well in Point Loma, I’d laugh and ask if you have eyes. Having family in North Dakota, I’ve seen my fair share of pumpjacks, and I know full well I haven’t seen one around town.
But, today we’re talking about the ones that are out of commission. You wouldn’t know they are there because all that drilling equipment is long gone. There are currently 34 idle oil wells in San Diego. That means they haven’t been active in at least two years and have not yet been sealed.
One Clairemont resident really didn’t like the sound of this when she found out that the three idle wells in the community are near at least 12 schools, playgrounds and healthcare centers.
Our Mireya Miner dug into how these inactive wells could cost Californians a pretty penny to clean up, and the potential health risks scientists need to study in-depth.
