Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!

At long last, it seems as though the weather is cooling off and San Diego fall is in full swing. The drop in temperature also coincides with Halloween and the conclusion of daylight saving time! Halloween, per usual, is on Oct. 31 but it falls on a Saturday this year.

If you’re still without plans this Halloweekend, there are few things happening in our own neighborhood that are worth showing up for in your best costume. On Newport Avenue, The Harp is hosting a Halloween Party on Saturday starting at 8 p.m. The party will feature live performances by Alific, Geoff Weers and Safety Orange. Tickets are $30 and costumes are highly encouraged.

If you’re looking for something more family-friendly and free, the OB Community Foundation put a map together of Halloween-decorated houses around Point Loma and Ocean Beach. If you think your house should be on the map, it’s free to sign up and add your spooky abode to the list. The map and application can be found here!

If Halloween night turns out to be a haywire one, then you’re in luck. You get an extra hour of sleep as we fall back an hour with the end of daylight saving time. Yes, whether you like it or not, the days are going to feel a lot shorter until March 14, 2027, when we spring forward.

Every year, someone brings up that “we voted to get rid of daylight saving, right?” Sort of. In 2018 Californians overwhelmingly voted yes on Proposition 7 which gave the California legislature the ability to change it. But to permanently stay in daylight saving time it requires a ⅔ vote from the California Senate and the federal government would need to sign off on it. So as of 2026, we are still falling back to standard time.

As for now, I’m just going to bask in that extra hour of sleep on Halloween night.
