Ambitious neighborhood plans

Housing and its development is a constant topic of conversation in San Diego, and Point Loma is certainly no exception to the issue.

In recent news, the Midway Rising development has run into another roadblock. The California Supreme Court restored the 30-foot height limit for the area. The project would provide over 4,000 housing units and 130,000 square feet of commercial space.

The court ruling doesn’t seem to have discouraged the developers and city one bit though. Mayor Todd Gloria was adamant on his commitment to the development in his 2026 State of the City address last Thursday. 

The restoration of the height limit was celebrated by the Save Our Access folks who want to make the space public land. Regardless, I think something needs to be done with the area. As you all may know, I live in OB and really try to avoid the area unless I absolutely need something from Target or Home Depot.

It’s been neglected for far too long, and it’s disappointing to see it get wrapped up in all this bureaucracy as it continues to deteriorate. 

Not too far from the Midway area, the former Consulate Hotel, if you haven’t noticed already, is undergoing renovations. The Celeste will be a 127-unit complex with both one-bedroom and studio apartments. Four of the units are reserved for low-income residents.

Though I understand the importance of keeping historical buildings around, I also think it’s good to see developers take advantage of pre-existing structures rather than starting completely fresh.
