Today’s newsletter is presented by The Midway Laundry.
Good morning, San Diego.
It’s a quiet Sunday morning in my neighborhood, but that’s going to change in a couple of hours – I’m not too far from Adams Avenue, where the venerable Adams Avenue Street Fair has been an annual tradition since 1982. It’s one of the largest free street festivals around, and it’s always packed full of great bands and booths and kiosks filled with interesting things, although I will admit that it feels as though the acts I want to see the most start later and later every year. I had to grudgingly let go of seeing a Bostich+Fussible show last night because it started too late for me, and I’m grumpy about it today. If you managed to catch the later shows last night, I’m jealous.
On the other hand, if you missed the street fair, there’s still a whole other day ahead of you to check it out, for the people-watching if nothing else.
But I’m getting distracted by the thoughts of washing down fair food with a big old plastic cup of sugarcane juice. There’s a lot of news in today’s newsletter, and I suppose I should get to it. An investigation has shown that ADUs, which were supposed to increase the city’s housing to help improve affordability for locals, are instead being illegally used as short-term rentals, upsetting neighbors who have to endure house parties, loud arguments, and all sorts of other ills.
Who could have predicted that bad actors would take advantage of rental properties in a housing crisis? Read more about that in our top story.
San Diego has always appealed to artists of all sorts through the years, for probably obvious reasons, and sometimes that gets expressed in unusual and wonderful ways. This time, it’s through public transit, as 45 local dancers bring custom choreographed performances to Metropolitan Transit System stations. Audiences can follow the dancers from station to station.
There are still some tickets left, so check out our story for links.
And speaking of the arts, listen up Swifties: Taylor Swift’s ‘Life of a Showgirl’ release party for her twelfth studio album is coming to San Diego’s AMC theaters from October 3 through the 5th. Tickets can be found online. Don’t say I never did anything for you.
